Sponsor Tribe Love - Meet Nicole Burley

I set an intention of creating a tribe of women who believed in each other, held space to support each other and who I would love to go have tea with and sit and talk for hours.

Sponsor Tribe Love is a way to share unique businesses and skills from some of this tribe with you. I have so much gratitude for their support.

Meet Nicole Burley, a friend from the online community of awesome people I have the pleasure of meeting and learning from on a daily basis. I know you will love the work Nicole is up to as much as I do.

Health is fun. Diets are not.

Six simple words that describe my philosophy!

I should probably let you know that I have tried EVERYTHING. Name a diet, a plan, a regimen, a program - and I have probably done it. It's exhausting, isn't it? Hopping from plan to plan, trying to find the magic key to lasting health and weight loss?

Personally, I got really fed up with it - and I devoted myself to finding a more compassionate, livable path to health and vitality.

This path led me to become a certified Life Coach and Health Coach. My speciality is plant-based nutrition. I started my life coaching practice because I believe that health is contagious - in the best sense of the word. Have you ever noticed that when you redecorate one room in your house, you end up really wanting to do all the other rooms, as well? I see the same thing happen for my clients when they begin to create health in their lives. It may begin in the body, but eventually it catches on everywhere else.

It's important to me to stay light-hearted and down to earth. There is no dieting, suffering, or deprivation allowed on my watch! I encourage knowledge, vision, and compassion as the real key to lasting health.

On a Saturday afternoon what can you be found doing that brings you joy?

I live in New York City with my husband. For some reason, the way the light comes through our windows at 3pm is absolutely glorious. It only lasts for about 15-20 minutes - but it's so beautiful! It makes the whole apartment feel sun-kissed and it really changes my mood - no matter what else had been going beforehand. My favorite thing on a Saturday afternoon is to be in comfy clothes, have a gorgeous cup of tea, relax on the couch with my husband (also gorgeous in my opinion!), and soak in that 20-minutes of truly joyful sunlight.

What comes to mind when you hear the word passion?

To me, passion means that giddy, energizing tickle that lights you up from the inside out. It's a sustained - and sustainable - glow that means you are inspired, motivated, and satisfied.

Sponsor Tribe Love - Welcome Hope Returns

I set an intention of creating a tribe of women who believed in each other, held space to support each other and who I would love to go have tea with and sit and talk for hours.

Sponsor Tribe Love is a way to share unique businesses and skills from some of this tribe with you. I have so much gratitude for their support.

Meet Virginia Hopkins and Crystal Gadwah Gantz. These two women are very special friends of mine, people who make my life all the more richer. Even though the giveaway is local, I know you will all be inspired by this story of friends creating something wonderful together. Local mamas check out the giveaway at the bottom of the post.

 *** *** ***

hope returns is a children’s resale and gift shop in the Summit neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. hope returns carries gently used children’s clothing newborn to size 10, as well as equipment, books, toys and shoes. hope returns also features handcrafted gifts such as heirloom quality wooden toys, dress up clothing, Peruvian sweaters, and herbal teas designed for Moms and kids. hope returns strives to offer a wide variety of affordable items, not easily found elsewhere, in a fun and kid friendly environment. Our resale inventory is purchased from our customers, fostering a unique and ongoing relationship with both customers and the community.

We are hope returns: Crystal and Virginia, two Providence moms with five young girls between us. In our former lives, we were a Biologist and a Social Worker. Unknown to us at the time, our journey began when we met four years ago as our oldest girls entered Kindergarten together. We were seeking a career that would allow us flexibility to explore and follow our creative passions without compromising the care of and commitment to our families. When word came that an existing children’s shop was available for purchase, hope returns was born. Midnight brainstorming became commonplace as the ideas formed and the plan developed. Two friends became much closer, and the legal contracts sealed the deal. We bought the existing business in July, closed for a month for renovations, and reopened as hope returns in August of 2011.

For the two of us, the equal partnership extends beyond the business. The most compelling aspect of this woman-owned business is the support we are able to offer one another in the raising of our children and in the building of the business. Due to our families’ schedules, we are both the primary caregivers of our children. So, when one is at work, a sick child can be picked up by the other, or carpooling can include several destinations. It is this unwavering support that has made the impossible almost possible: finding the balance between home and work.

hope returns is a baby in the business world; growing and evolving each day. It is a space that is available for browsing, for kids to play, for families to chat and vent and relax. It is a business that we can all feel good about both financially and environmentally.

We are part of our community in a way that we hope to be proud of and to nurture in years to come. And the same goes for our friendship!

Sponsor Tribe Love - Welcome Bee Ventures

I set an intention of creating a tribe of women who believed in each other, held space to support each other and who I would love to go have tea with and sit and talk for hours.

Sponsor Tribe Love is a way to share unique businesses and skills from some of this tribe with you. I have so much gratitude for their support.

Meet Christyna Lewis. We connected in the first Joy Up and I am thrilled to have her message on Mama Space. I know many of you are making 2012 the year you develop a loving relationship with your finances, and here is a woman who can help. This is joy.

Christyna is also the first guest for the Mamacoach Circle live calls! (And a huge thank you for the generous giveaway from Christyna, this is something that can change your life.)

 *** *** ***

I am a compassionate and intuitive financial coach. I am a gardener, Reiki healer, bicyclist, wife. I culture vegetables. I have studied non-violent communication for 10 years. I ran Houston's local organic vegetable co-op, growing with it to serve over 260 families per week & seeing it become a quarter of a million dollar business. I am unabashedly optimistic.

My passion is empowerment, especially financial empowerment. I believe that everyone can have peace and ease in their financial life, even- no, especially- creative, vibrant, heart-forward idealists, nurturers, and healers! The amount of money in your bank accounts matters much less than knowing you are using (or saving) your money as an expression of your unique values and principles. Juliet Schor cites a study in  "The Overspent American" showing that most Americans feel they need about 10% more money to be comfortable. This study was in the 90s, but  this "just 10% more" held true whether the person had an income of $20,000 or $200,000. The amount of money clearly isn't the driving factor in these people's experience of lack- how we handle and relate to money is. What if you could find 'enoughness' right where you are, right now?

That's where BEE Ventures comes in.  For the past four years, I have been creating a safe space, without judgements or shame, for my clients to be with their finances, just as they are now. Many are for the first time really cutting through their fear and worry to see the naked facts. From that strong foundation in a true financial picture, I teach simple techniques and habits (techniques designed for creatives, not accountants) for my clients to grow step-by-step, let go of worry, late fees, fear, and overdraft penalties.

Choosing authentically. Experiencing peace. Clearing the way for JOY.

This is what drives me to my work as a financial coach. This is why I am so grateful and proud to be a member of Hannah's tribe.

On a Saturday afternoon what can you be found doing that brings you joy?

It's terribly domestic, but a joyful Saturday afternoon this time of year consists of shopping the farmers market with my Mister (oh the greens! Winter is a time of abundance in Houston). Then we clean the kitchen; maybe take a friend her share of our latest community pickle. Taking care of us and our house at a leisurely pace, really savoring the time together, that is joyful. Our Saturday evening is often a bike ride through the neighborhood.

What comes to mind when you hear the word passion?

A bright swirl of pinks and oranges. Laughter. The sparkle in my glass at dinner with friends. The smell of fresh berries.

It's a collage of activities- Eric cleaning up the local creek, my mom's face when she is talking about Guatemala, Mike explaining the new dish he's just made, Stacey sharing a new insight into compost. The earnestness and wonder of most TED talks.

Passion is when we let that warm sparkle that is inside each of us, when we let that shine through.

Sponsor Tribe Highlights ~ Morning Ritual

I asked my tribe of sponsors what rituals they have in the morning to ground them and allow them to step into their day with ease. Enjoy some inspiration for encouraging your own gentle mornings.

(And congrats to Faith Barr for winning Tory's raw chocolate bracelet box. Oh yes!)

————————————————————————————————————————————–

From Christie Halmick:

"Morning rituals: hugging my girls tight, sipping a cup of coffee or tea, making my bed, taking a walk with my husband and our dog, Libby, and emptying out the dishwasher."

From Erin Goodman:

"Every morning you will find me in my yoga studio (ahem...also known as our upstairs hallway) doing Sun Salutations, which can vary from a simple prayer breath to a full expression of postures.
It is only this past year that I started giving myself this daily gift. My yoga practice used to be catch-as-catch-can or only on the days I go to the studio, with my focus too often being on the lack of yoga space in our house and the busyness of my life that doesn't allow for yoga.
One day this past year when I was going through a particularly challenging stretch of days, I decided I would just do it. Show up every day. Rain. Shine. Peace. Chaos. And spend a few minutes centering and breathing and welcoming the day.

From Tory Marsh:

"When I wake up, even before I get out of bed, I repeat a mantra to myself: "I am happy. I am healthy. I am wealthy." After this, I focus on the big picture of where my life is going... visualize my goals coming true, the life I want to live, the feelings I want to have, the way I want my life to be. I focus on happiness. I focus on feeling great. I focus on feeling fulfilled. I focus on adventure and opportunity. So, when I get out of bed I am excited to see what the day will bring."

 From Jen Lashua:

"My morning ritual to keep me going & grounded is, tea.

Honestly making a cup of tea brings me back to that single present moment, even when utter chaos erupts around me. I can actually be present for that moment, to fill my breath and belly with the steam and aromas from the cup, they fill me up... Sip by sip, enjoying the peace it brings to me. Tea, helps me be more grounded in my day."

Sponsor Tribe Love ~ Tory Marsh Chocolates

I set an intention of creating a tribe of women who believed in each other, held space to support each other and who I would love to go have tea with and sit and talk for hours.

Sponsor Tribe Love is a way to share unique businesses and skills from some of this tribe with you. I have so much gratitude for their support and all they offer to the world.

Meet Tory Marsh. If you were part of August's Joy Up you may already know Tory. She is friend, master-mind partner, and my teacher of how to believe in abundance. Welcome to Mama Space, Tory, thank you for digging deep and sharing your beautiful story.

————————————————————————————————————————————–

Here's the story behind the story of How I Started A Raw Vegan Chocolate Company, you will not find this in my About Page.

As a child I was one of those good at everything types. Tops in the spelling bee, only girl on the boys soccer team, playing the piano in church kind of kids. I think they call them high achievers now, but then, it was just what I did. So, when dreaming of my life in the future I saw nothing that I could not do. Which also made it hard to pin down and target, since the world was wide open to me.

I loved hard. I lived cautiously, I was afraid of when someone would find out that I wasn't truly perfect. I had a hard time with concentration, I was great at multitasking but would often get lost by my next project before the first was the best it could be... luckily, things were always a bit better than good enough. But for me, I didn't know what I was capable of since I had never really pushed.

I was prescribed Ritalin in college after a slew of anti-depressants with varying effect (Prozac made me steal, and Zoloft made me make unnecessary appointments that I wouldn't go to).

There was what felt like a big chunk of time when I felt my life was really hard. I was moving slowly through a very foggy time. It was all unclear and people were dropping like flies. It took all I had to put one foot in front of the other. This segment of my life had it's most punctuated moments when I was 29; starting with a dear friend found dead on my bathroom floor the morning after my Christmas Tree Trimming Party. Two months later my sister was killed in a car accident. My boyfriend left. A good friend fell out of a window to his death. My college roommate died of colon cancer. Coming to a head a few years later with my best friend's fatal heart attack. Five hard years of broken hearts and patching myself together.

What I came out with though was a true commitment to living beyond my fears, living each day with the only goal of doing what makes me happy. At each loss I reminded myself about happiness, and did the best I could to figure out what that meant for me. Sometimes it meant letting the city see my tears on the subway as I rode to work. Or, it meant a Netflix marathon of the entire series of Lost. My pain and searching brought me closer to myself than I had ever been before in full awareness. It was filled with the shedding of expectations, hurt, old patterns, and pushing boundaries to test where they lie. But, with that came the freedom to feel, to test, and to live. Since living was my goal. True living. It took time to figure out what that meant on a personal level. I didn't just wake up knowing. And I really didn't know what to look for or if I'd know when I found it. I honestly believe we do the best we can in every situation, and sometimes that situation calls for Jack Daniel's.

Looking back on it there were plenty of great experiences happening at the same time, like assisting famed Minimalist Sol LeWitt on a giant wall drawing at Trinity College (my alma mater), or working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Or the years spent managing restaurants for famous celebrity chefs who taught me invaluable secrets of food and success on a daily basis. Or my time working for Quintessentially, the world's leading luxury lifestyle group, where I spent all of my time dealing in exotic locations and extravagant living where I learned that anything truly is possible, as we made those dreams come true on a daily basis. Or how I was layed off from my job just in time to attend Institute for Integrative Nutrition and step into this next part of my life. However, at the time none of these things seemed to make sense or that there would one day be a reason for it all.

The reason I share this, beyond Hannah's gift at providing a safe space, is to let you know that there's all of us in everything we do. Had I planned to start a chocolate company, I probably would have made different choices... like, say, go to culinary school. But, for me, it has always been the journey. And, I believe it's in that journey where all of the sweetness, magic, and purpose is to be found. To go with what makes us happy, to feel complete, and to remain open to what the Universe provides is such a gift. We have all we need at any given time, we just need the courage to believe it. Having healed my own health, and life. It has found me again in the kitchen. My creativity, my passion, and my experience... all coming through in handmade chocolates.

So, in answer to Hannah's question to me... Where did your chocolate come from? There's my answer, all this and more. It holds every bit of my love, hope and happiness and is my gift to you.

Thank you for giving me a place to share the other side of my story.

Tory is generously offering a giveaway of a bracelet box of her delicious (yes, I've savored them) raw chocolates to one lucky Mama Space tribe member. Simply leave a comment and tell us what you love to combine with chocolate. I love that sprinkle of sea salt! Tory's packaging is one of the most beautiful I've seen.

Sponsor Tribe Love is a way to share unique businesses and skills from some of this tribe with you. I have so much gratitude for their support.

Meet Erin Goodman. She is friend, teacher and magical creator of joy in my world and I am blessed to share her with you on Mama Space. (Although if you've known me for long, you've heard me shine my love on her before!)

————————————————————————————————————————————–

My name is Erin Goodman and I am an interfaith minister, Reiki practitioner and yoga teacher who works with couples, children and families to nurture, support, heal and celebrate. At the core of my work -- whether I am teaching yoga, leading a retreat or helping a couple to create their wedding ceremony -- are awareness, intention and an open heart.

(I am also a wife and mother who sometimes struggles to practice what I teach.)

In all that I do, I seek to connect kindred spirits and build supportive community. It is this deep passion that led me to found the Rhode Island Birth Network shortly after the birth of my first child.

I am currently working on several projects that are near and dear to my heart.

In just a couple of weeks I will be launching a new podcast called Behind the Blog where each month I will go behind the scenes with my soul sisters to talk openly about parenting, partnership, passion and life beyond blog posts, tweets and status updates.

(My first show is an interview with none other than Hannah Marcotti and I think you are really going to like what she has to say about blogging and authenticity.)

Behind the Blog

I’m also thrilled to be collaborating with my daughter Lily (7) to offer a Mother-Daughter Mini-Yoga Retreat called “Sharing the Light,” which we will offer next month at All That Matters in Wakefield, RI and are currently scheduling for additional venues throughout Southern New England.

Sharing the Light

And every Sunday, you can find me at exhale. return to center. sharing a “sunday still life” reflection. This project began as a way to slow down and recenter myself during a particularly stressful time in my life and has evolved into a powerful weekly practice that I welcome others to join me in at any time.

sunday still life

I have a couple of other exciting projects in the works that are a little too new to talk about just yet, but a great way to keep in touch with me and the work that I am doing is to subscribe to my bi-weekly e-zine { breathing space }.

What are you doing on a Saturday afternoon that brings you joy?

Most Saturday afternoons you will find me at an outdoor altar, holding space for a couple as they join their lives in marriage. It is such an honor for me to be able to share my gifts in this way; my work truly brings me joy!

What comes to mind when I say passion?

Mmmm…passion.

Passion is an all in, fully awake, jump out of bed and hit the ground running energy.

It is the excitement, anticipation and wonder I felt as a child on Christmas morning – but even better because as an adult I know that I can tap into this energy any day of the year!

Thank you, Hannah. I am so honored to share this space with you!

Sponsor Tribe Love - jewels branch creative

I am blessed. This is our first sponsor tribe love post and I am so happy that this weekend is filled with two people whom I adore (tomorrow you get to meet the other one).

I am blessed because I set an intention of creating a tribe of women who believed in each other, supported each other and who I would love to go have tea with and sit and talk for hours.

Meet Christie Halmick. She represents all of those things and I am so honored to share her with you and thank her for supporting this space and our tribe here at Mama Space. And business owners, make sure to see her amazing giveaway at the bottom of the post, so, so generous.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello!

My name is Christie Halmick. Like all of you, I am different things to different people. I’m mom to twin girls, a wife, a daughter, a sister, and an aunt. I cherish each of those roles. I’m a book reader, a magazine junkie, a home-grown tomato lover, an apron wearer, a fiction writer (sometimes), and a friend cheerleader.

In my business, Jewels Branch Creative, I help smart, savvy, quirky, creative women entrepreneurs build beautiful online brands that reflect them at their best. My favorite part of this work is getting to know my clients. In the course of translating their visions of their business into the words and images that make their brand, I become my client’s biggest fan.

I fall in love with their quirks, their fears, and their dreams. It’s very satisfying to have my hands deep in the making of a business, to see the transformation from idea to reality, and to see my clients succeed.

In a given week I use a mix of my graphic design, journalism, and marketing skills. As a creator, I thrive because of the range of work I get to do each week: create logos, brainstorm with my clients about content, pick out perfect photos for ebooks, and design websites. I’m so lucky to have my husband, Jamie, as my tech guru. His steadiness balances me when I get wrapped up in projects and forget to eat.

I believe that I’m here to support other women in doing what they do best. My creative business gives me a wonderful venue to do so.

Hannah asked me to answer two questions:

On a Saturday afternoon what can you be found doing that brings you joy?

On a Saturday afternoon I can be found heading to the local Mexican restaurant with my husband and daughters. When my girls were babies we would tuck their car seats onto the booth by us and they would snooze while we got our Mexican fix. As toddlers they ate fists full of rice and beans and made obnoxious messes (which we always helped the waiters clean up). Now they have their favorite dishes and order for themselves. It is our little way of marking time, punctuating the end of the week together.

What comes to mind when you hear the word passion?

When I hear the word passion I think about my grandmothers. I had quiet grandmas. They seemed to me to have deep reserves of will power, joy, and resilience. Their passion came in the form of adoration, through solid hugs, cookies and warm smiles. They were happy with the little things, like the way my hair was curled on Sunday mornings. They focused intently on details of everyday life, observing carefully rocks I’d brought up from the creek like they were the most important rocks in the world. I have no doubt that I was loved, fully, deeply, unconditionally. That was their passion.
